I have a complete AR-15 upper assembly and it has the typical flash hider. I want to change the muzzle device for something new. Can I take the flash hider off?
To remove the flash hider from your AR-15, you’ll need a few tools. First, you’ll need a qualified gunsmith or armorer to remove the old flash hider. Next, you’ll need a vise and a platform to place your AR-15 on while working. Finally, you’ll need a 1/2″ wrench or another appropriate tool to loosen the clutching flash hider retaining nut.
Once you have all of your tools ready, follow these steps:
- Unload and clear your AR-15 completely. Make sure there is no ammunition present in the firearm or within arms reach before beginning any work.
- Place your platform upside down in your vise.
- Use your wrench to loosen the flash hider retaining nut. Be sure to hold onto the flash hider itself so it doesn’t fall off and become lost while you’re removing the nut.
- Remove the flash hider and retaining nut from your AR-15.
- Inspect the threads on both the flash hider and the AR-15’s barrel. If there are any damaged or deformed threads, have them repaired by a qualified gunsmith or armorer before proceeding.
- Place the new flash hider on the barrel and start threading it by hand.
- Once the new flash hider is started, use your wrench to tighten it down. Be sure not to over-tighten, as this can damage the flash hider or the threads on the barrel.
- Reassemble the rest of your AR-15 and you’re ready to go!
If you have any further questions about flash hiders or need help removing or installing one, be sure to consult a qualified gunsmith or armorer.
