A flash hider, sometimes called a flash suppressor, is a device attached to the muzzle of a rifle that reduces the visibility of the muzzle flash. The three primary purposes of a flash hider are to protect the shooter’s night vision, to reduce the chance of temporary blindness or disorientation caused by the flash, and to conceal the shooter’s position.
A pinned flash hider is permanently attached to the rifle so that it cannot be easily removed.
This is done for two reasons:
- first, to ensure that the flash hider stays securely in place;
- and second, to make sure that it meets the legal length requirements for the overall length of the firearm.
Flash hiders come in various sizes and shapes, but the most common types are the A2-style flash hider and the birdcage flash hider.
