A suppressor, also known as a silencer, is a device attached to or integral to the barrel of a firearm that reduces the amount of noise and flash generated by firing the weapon. Suppressors are legal in 42 states. A person must have a valid firearms owner’s identification card (FOID) and be at least 18 years old to possess a suppressor in Illinois. In California, a person must have a Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) and be at least 21 years old to possess a suppressor.
To purchase a suppressor, you will need to go through a licensed firearms dealer. The dealer will need to conduct a background check on you through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). You will also need to fill out a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) Form 4. This form requires you to submit fingerprints and have passport-style photographs taken. You will also need to pay a $200 tax. Once the ATF approves your Form 4, you will be able to pick up your suppressor from the dealer.
