Can I have a loaded mag locked in the case with my gun?
Generally speaking, yes. There are a few things to keep in mind, however.
First, it’s always best to check with the airline ahead of time to see if there are any restrictions on bringing firearms or ammunition on the plane.
Second, you will need to declare both the firearms and the ammunition at the airport checkpoint. Make sure you have your firearms license or permit with you as well.
Third, it’s important to remember that TSA will not allow firearms or ammunition in checked baggage. They must be carried on board the aircraft in a locked hard-sided case. The ammo must also be packed in a separate container and placed in a locked hard-sided container inside your checked bag.
Fourth, you should always travel with your firearms unloaded. That means no magazine inserted and no round in the chamber.
Lastly, it’s a good idea to keep your guns and ammo in separate bags, just to be safe. This will help avoid any confusion at the airport and make things go more smoothly.
