Section 32000 of the California Penal Code prohibits the manufacture, sale, loan, or possession of a “multi burst trigger activator,” which is defined as “any device designed to sir simultaneously more than one shot from a firearm by a single function of the trigger.” Understandably, this prohibition might lead someone to wonder whether it’s legal to own a pistol grip in California.
The answer is maybe. It depends on how the pistol grip is incorporated into the firearm. If the pistol grip is considered a “multi burst trigger activator,” then it’s illegal. However, if the pistol grip is integrated into the firearm in such a way that it does not fall within that definition, then it might be legal.
For example, a pistol grip might be considered a “multi burst trigger activator” if it’s used in conjunction with a detachable magazine that has more than 10 rounds capacity. In that case, the pistol grip would be illegal. On the other hand, if the pistol grip is integrated into the firearm so that it cannot be used with a detachable magazine, then it would not be considered a “multi burst trigger activator” and might be legal.
Of course, this is just one example. There are other ways that a pistol grip might or might not be considered a “multi burst trigger activator.” The best way to determine whether a particular pistol grip is legal in California is to consult with a knowledgeable firearms attorney.
