A gun magazine works by using the recoil of the gun to eject the spent cartridge and load a new cartridge into the barrel. When you pull the trigger, the firing pin hits the cartridge, which sets off an explosion that propels the bullet out of the barrel. As the bullet leaves the barrel, it creates a vacuum behind it that sucks in new cartridges from the magazine and pushes them into place against the firing pin. Then, as soon as the previous cartridge has been ejected from the gun, it springs back forward under its spring pressure and captures another round from the magazine. This all happens in a matter of milliseconds, so there’s always a fresh cartridge ready to fire when you pull the trigger.
