Hello, Newbie question here. How do you remove lead fouling out of a barrel?
So you want to remove lead from a gun barrel? Here are a few methods that should do the trick:
1. Use a commercial lead removal kit. These kits typically come with a set of cylindrical brushes that fit into the bore of your gun barrel. You’ll also need some sort of solvent to go along with the brushes. Follow the instructions that come with the kit, and you should be able to remove most of the lead from your barrel.
2. If you don’t have a lead removal kit, you can improvise one using some household items. For example, you can use an old toothbrush, cotton swabs, and some ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid). Simply soak the brush or swabs in the ATF, and then use them to scrub the lead out of your barrel.
3. Another improvised method is to use a bore snake. Bore snakes are essentially long, flexible brushes that can be passed through the bore of a gun barrel. To use one for lead removal, simply soak it in some solvent, and then run it through the barrel a few times.
4. Finally, you can always take your gun to a professional gunsmith and have them remove the lead for you. This is usually the best option if you’re not comfortable doing it yourself.
Whichever method you choose, make sure that you thoroughly clean your barrel afterward to remove any residual lead or solvent. Otherwise, you could end up damaging your gun in the long run.
