To repair bluing on a gun barrel, you will need:
- steel wool
- copperas (ferrous sulfate)
- vinegar
- water
- nylon brush
Steel wool is optional if the rust is not too bad. Copperas is a common name for ferrous sulfate, which can be found at most hardware stores. Vinegar is also easily accessible, and water can be obtained from any faucet. A nylon brush can be purchased at any local store that sells firearms or firearm accessories.
- Rub the steel wool over the surface of the barrel to remove any rust that has built up. If there is excessive rust, it may be necessary to use a stronger abrasive such as sandpaper.
- Mix the copperas with water in a ratio of 1:3. Soak a clean rag in the mixture and apply it to the barrel. Allow it to sit for 15-20 minutes.
- Rinse the barrel with clean water to remove the copper mixture.
- Fill a bucket with hot water and vinegar in a ratio of 1:1. Soak a clean rag in the mixture and apply it to the barrel. Allow it to sit for 15-20 minutes.
- Rinse the barrel with clean water to remove the vinegar mixture.
- Dry the barrel with a clean cloth.
- Apply a thin layer of oil to the barrel. This will help protect the bluing from future rust.
- Buff the barrel with a clean cloth to remove any excess oil.
