A grip safety is a feature on some firearms that helps prevent the gun from being fired unless it is held properly. This safety is usually located in the back of the grip and is engaged when you hold the gun firmly in your hand. The grip safety on a 1911 pistol, for example, is automatically disengaged when the user grips the weapon properly with their thumb placed over the safety lever. This forces your hand and fingers to wrap around the grip and keep your thumb in place, which ensures that you will not accidentally fire the weapon if it’s dropped or if something happens to knock it out of your hand.
