A suppressor, also known as a “silencer”, is a device that attaches to the barrel of a gun to reduce the amount of noise it makes when fired. It does this by trapping and cooling the expanding gases released by the bullet as it leaves the barrel, which reduces the sound made by the explosion.
Suppressors are legal in many countries, but they are heavily regulated. In the United States, for example, you need a special permit from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives to own one.
